XLR8R 335 Lee Bannon『Podcast』

這個XLR8R最新Mix邀來年初才透過Ninja Tune廠牌發表首張專輯Alternate/Endings而目前定居於紐約的新生代Jungle製作Lee Bannon包辦，裡頭除了多首Lee Bannon的未發表新曲在內，開頭選用芝加哥Juke/Footwork製作DJ Earl並由Lee Bannon混音重製的Get to Work以及結尾曲UK Will Not Survive來自Modern Love廠牌的Rainer Veil也是自己點進非聽不可的主因。

正在想Paul Woolford才剛以Special Request的名義發行專輯Soul Music，但為何沒趁勢上RA推出個Mix之類，原來是先獻給了XLR8R，在他的這段Mix裡並沒有用上ＳＰ的任何單曲來做宣傳，不過選曲部分還是不脫離ＳＰ的基礎（Jungle/Breakbeat/DnB），自己並不全然是個DnB的愛好者，但Special Request裡的Jungle因子還是打中了我。

XLR8R剛推出了新的podcast這次執掌的是來自Mark Pritchard和Steve Spacek兩人的Africa Hitech，這次他倆帶來的是Juke/Footwork這源起於芝加哥浩室分支類型的Mixset，正常原始的Juke/Footwork它的BPM在150-160間，因為數度之快一般人大約跳個一個半小時左右就厭倦了，在今年許多Bass Music製作裡其實都有Juke/Footwork的成份在內，但已經不局限於在那BPM 150-160，相信Juke/Footwork在明年更會是白熱化。

XLR8R的Podcast #178來自英國DJ Oneman (a.k.a. Steve Bishop)，本身在Rinse FM有主持在今年也發行過一張Rinse:11 Mixed by Oneman選輯，所以聽Dubstep、UK Garage音樂的人都多少該認識他，502 Recordings這個Dubstep、Grime、UK Garage新廠牌也是Oneman成立的，目前只有兩張發行Fis-T的Night Hunter就是廠牌的首張發行001，而廠牌的002發行Jay Weed在這次XLR8R Podcast 178裡可以聽到。

Hyetal是來自於Bristol的Dubstep Producer/DJ，初次聽到Hyetal的音樂是在Mary Anne Hobbs 09年交由Planet Mu發行的Wild Angels選集裡的ㄧ曲We Should Light A Fire，產量不多的Hyetal年初至今只陸續與Shortstuff、Peverelist合作透過Punch Drunk廠牌發行了兩張單曲Don't Sleep、The Hum / rrrr以及在Orca Recordings這個倫敦新廠牌發行的個人單曲Phoenix / Like Silver，這次受邀在XLR8R的Podcast系列169出現，從Hyetal選曲的第一首Braiden的The Alps開始到結尾挑選oOoOO、Cocteau Twins，就知道Hyetal的這段Mixset是值得一聽的。
Bristol producer Hyetal is a relative newcomer on the XLR8R radar screen, but he's spent much of the past year quietly releasing a high-quality arsenal of tunes and establishing himself as an artist to keep tabs on. Working both solo and in collaboration with heavy hitters such as Shortstuff and fellow Bristolian Peverelist—we recently previewed their new single of Punch Drunk—Hyetal adeptly combines dubstep-influenced percussion and low-end with blippy synths and a melodic sensibility that appears to draw its greatest influence from classic videogames. But Hyetal isn't just another UK bedroom beat jockey; as this mix demonstrates, his tastes are quite diverse. Listen in as he pairs his own productions with futuristic house gems and also finds the time to breeze through hip-hop re-fixes, witch house, and classic 4AD serenity. [via XLR8R]

Maya Medvesek來自Glasgow化名為的8Bitch是和Ikonika、Cooly G（姑且算她是）等少數女性Dubstep Producer/DJ之一，繼她7月份在Starkey個人廠牌Silt Jockey下發行的首張單曲G41後，8Bitch將轉往另一UK獨立廠牌Seed Records於11月底發行Equinox EP新作，透過了XLR8R的介紹得知8Bitch在這張新EP內將會帶來Dubstep以外如UK Garage/R&B/90'中期Warp之聲在新作內，雖還未能先偷聽到此EP，但還是有首XLR8R形容"it's like M83 in a dubstep template..."交由American Man（LuckyMe）的成員Claude Speeed炮製8Bitch新作內ㄧ曲Orpheus的混音單曲先聽。

Of all the figures in the post-dubstep diaspora, few have been as instrumental as Bok Bok. As most readers of XLR8R probably know, the London-based producer/DJ is also the co-founder of the Night Slugs imprint, which has quickly established itself at the top of the heap when it comes to the forward-thinking house and bass music that continues to spring forth from the UK's long-running hardcore continuum. His place in the canon of UK dance music aside, it's worth mentioning that Bok Bok (a.k.a. Alex Sushon) is also a highly skilled DJ who is just as likely to pull out a classic house or grime tune as he is a futuristic dubplate. As such, we've been hounding him for the past year to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast, and he's come through in fine style, littering his mix with unheard gems from Night Slugs brethren (Girl Unit, Jam City, Optimum), fellow UK heavy hitters (Geeneus, Ikonika, Untold, Terror Danjah), and a few unexpected jams that still go down smooth—after all, it's hard to argue with kwaito, Dam-Funk, or Azari & III in any mix. NY-based shoegaze trio Kordan's "Mirror" is a driving dreamscape of guitar fuzz, plinking synths, and hushed vocal delivery. LA-based producer Take's "Mirror" is an equally heavenly production, albeit one driven by the soul of dark synth-funk and Southern California's ever-changing beatscape. The differences between the two versions of the East Coast band's cut—off its debut album, The Longing—are obvious, and yet Take manages to convey the same pensively resilient ethos of the original with a wholly different sound palette. It seems like ages ago, but it has only been a year since we put Cooly G on the cover of XLR8R and began exploring the mutant strain of UK funky being turned out by a select crew of UK producers. A big part of that article was focused around DVA (a.k.a. Scratcha DVA a.k.a. Leon Smart). The former grime disciple and long-time Rinse FM jock was one of the first artists to champion the deeper, housier side of funky, and continues to push boundaries with his percussion-heavy production style and occasionally bonkers sense of melody. On top of his DJ duties, he also runs his own label and has released music on Blackdown's Keysound Recordings and Kode9's iconic Hyperdub label. In fact, Hyperdub is home to Scratcha's next 12", "Just Vybe" b/w "Step 2 Funk," which includes a collaboration with vocalist Fatima. That record doesn't drop until October 4, so this exclusive XLR8R podcast will have to tide over the DVA faithful in the meantime. As expected, he's sprinkled in plenty of dubplates and unreleased tunes; pay close attention, as this mix is probably a good indication of where funky is headed next. [via XLR8R]

It may be a little early to start handing out Label of the Year nominations, but as it stands now, it would be hard to omit London's Night Slugs imprint from serious consideration. Label bosses Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 may get the lion's share of the attention, but the artist roster they've assembled is just as impressive, perhaps none more so than 24-year-old DJ, producer, and recent Bubblin' subject Girl Unit. With only one official release and a smattering of remixes and other tracks to his name, he nonetheless displays a keen ear for US street sounds, whether it be ghettotech and juke or radio-ready hip-hop and R&B. This week, the London-based artist is embarking on his first US tour, during which he'll hopefully be able to take in some of these sounds first-hand while playing a smattering of dates on both coasts. To celebrate, he's put together this mix for the XLR8R podcast series, which literally came in at the last minute because he wanted to make extra sure to fill it with the latest dubplates and unreleased tunes. Even though he's a member of Bristol's much-discussed "Purple Trinity," it didn't feel like there was a ton of hype surrounding the release of Guido's debut full-length, Anidea, earlier this year. The initial buzz about Joker had already faded a bit, attentions had migrated back northward east toward London, and dubstep isn't exactly known for its great albums anyways. Yet Anidea was a great record, one that found 22-year-old Guy Middleton transcending traditional dubstep circles with its alien melodies, chunky synths, hip-hop vibe, and budget horn sounds. It certainly reminded us to keep an eye on Bristol, and more importantly, to finally wrangle Guido into putting together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast. Those familiar with his work won't be disappointed, as he combines some of his own tracks with like-minded, bass- and synth-heavy productions, including plenty of selections from the Punch Drunk label he calls home. Young UK DJ/producer and Numbers label co-conspirator Jack "Jackmaster" Revill graced last week's Sónar festival in Barcelona with a stellar mix of the many kinds of bass music and future-house tunes propagated by his insanely talented cohorts. As with the DJ set Braiden dropped at the electronic music festival, Red Bull Music Academy was on the scene and recording Jackmaster's deck magic for the event—catching every brilliant tune and slick mix the DJ pushed out of the soundsystem. A big part of Night Slugs' appeal is that the London-based crew tosses so many kinds electronic music into a virtual blender, only to produce something new and fresh in the end. Whether it's techno synths married with dubstep's low end, or grimey drums paired with a chopped-up house vocal, the results are always exhilarating, and it's been that way since the jump, as Mosca's Square One EP kicked off the label with aplomb and helped set the table for an exciting new wave of UK dance music. Now, less than six months after its release, we've tapped Mosca (a.k.a. Tom Reid) to put together an exclusive mix for the XLR8R podcast, and a quick glance at the massive tracklist makes it clear that his influences aren't limited to what's popping in London, or even the usual list of genre suspects. Over the course of nearly 70 minutes, he navigates hip-hop, grime, dancehall, house, techno, garage, cumbia crunk, tribal guarachero, and a litany of other sounds, ultimately producing a mix that is, quite literally, like nothing we've ever posted before. While the hyperactive playlist could have meant an ADD-addled mix lacking in sonic harmony, Mosca's flow feels entirely natural, and we're guessing the podcast will please music fans of all stripes—particularly those with a predilection for dark, sweaty, and tropical bass sounds.
